Chromium serves to enhance
insulin function

How does chromium work?

Chromium helps improve insulin function and optimise the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. This mineral can also help when you follow a low calorie diet. Chromium in fact reduces the feeling of hunger, thus maintaining a normal level of glucose in the blood. In this way, the appetite (and the desire for sweet foods) decreases.

The absorption of chromium from food is enhanced by vitamin C.

Chromium in the diet

Important sources of chromium are whole grain products and cereals. Even brown sugar, yeast, liver, meat and dairy products contain chromium.

A serving of meat, poultry and fish contain 1 to 2 micrograms of chromium. Vegetables and fruits have a highly variable content of this mineral.

Excess chromium

There are no known side effects due to excessive intake of chromium. The World Health Organization has set the safe upper limit of the integration of this mineral to 250 micrograms daily.

Lack of chromium

A lack of chromium is difficult to verify. In the event of a drastic reduction in food intake chromium deficiency can occur, which leads to an increase in the concentration of glucose and the level of cholesterol in the blood, something associated with weight loss

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

For those who are undergoing surgery to fit a gastric sleeve, the recommended amount of chromium should remain at 100% of the normal daily recommended allowance.

Following gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures

For those who have undergone surgeries that affect the bodies ability to absorb nutrients, such as gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch procedures, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is 160 micrograms (400% RDA). The greater need for chromium in the diet is explained by change in the function of the small intestine, where any chromium taken on by the body is absorbed.
