Iodine is required for
the synthesis of thyroid hormones

How does iodine work?

Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, which play an essential role in metabolism, but also in the development of the nervous system and promoting proper growth.

Since these hormones perform important tasks in the body, it is important to take an adequate amount of iodine in our diet. In the past, the amount of iodine taken through the diet was too low. Therefore it was decided to force bakers to use iodized salt. This requirement has now lapsed.

Iodine in the diet

Iodine may be present naturally in the soil, seawater and drinking water. In this way iodine is also found in foods such as seafood and vegetables. Even milk and dairy products contribute in introducing iodine to the body.

Lack of iodine

A lack of iodine can cause the onset of "goiter", or the enlarging of the thyroid gland. This can result in slowness of reactions, water retention in tissue and reduction in the capacity to concentrate.

Excess iodine

If the thyroid is operating normally, an excess of iodine (> 600 micrograms per day) is well tolerated by the body. If, on the contrary, the thyroid gland is not functioning properly, or works poorly, an excess of iodine can lead to an enlargement of the thyroid and excessive production of thyroid hormones. Among the possible problems include: insomnia, nervousness, increased appetite and weight loss.

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

After surgery for the placement of a gastric band or sleeve it is important to take a daily amount of 150 micrograms of iodine. This value corresponds to 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.
