Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

After surgery for the placement of a gastric band or sleeve, it is important to take a daily amount of manganese equal to 2 milligrams. This value is slightly higher than 100% of normal requirements Recommended Daily Allowance.

Following gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures

Because of changes made to the small intestine as a result of this type of intervention your needs of manganese increases. Because the tract of the intestine that absorbs manganese has been bypassed, you may not take on adequate levels of the mineral. Therefore, it is necessary to take more than 3 milligrams, or 150% of the Recommended Daily Requirement to provide your body with an adequate daily intake.

Manganese supplements

Calcium, phosphate and iron affect absorption of manganese. In cases where dieting will mean that these three substances are present in large quantities, the absorption of the mineral is reduced, while in the case of a reduced content of these three minerals, the absorption of manganese increases. WLS Optimum and WLS Forte supplements offer an adequate amount of manganese through taking just one capsule per day. For more information, please refer to our homepage: www.fitforme.co.uk
