Selenium acts
as an antioxidant

How does selenium work?

Selenium is an important mineral for the liver and thyroid.

Moreover, like vitamin E, selenium has an antioxidant function and protects the body's cells from free radicals.

Selenium in the diet

Selenium is present in most foods. The main sources of selenium are foods rich in protein, such as eggs, fish, meat (and offal). But also foods of plant origin, such as vegetables, contain selenium. Cereals are generally richer in selenium than vegetables.

Lack of selenium

Possible lack of selenium in the body may cause heart failure. However, in humans, there are no known cases of selenium deficiency.

Excess selenium

The tolerable upper limit for intake of selenium is 300 micrograms per day. Any excess of selenium increases the fragility of nails and hair. However, there are no known cases of excess selenium.

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

If you underwent surgery for the placement of a gastric band or sleeve, it is vital that an amount equal to 55 micrograms of selenium per day is consumed. This value corresponds to 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.

Following gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures

Because of the change in the small intestine as a result of this type of intervention your need for selenium increases. The tract of intestine that digests selenium is bypassed so that the body cannot take on sufficient amounts of the mineral. Therefore, it is necessary to take more than 105 micrograms daily, or more than 190% of the Recommended Daily Requirement to provide your body with an adequate daily intake.
