Zinc is important
for our immune system

How does zinc work?

Zinc plays an important role in various processes within the human body. For example it is important for the formation of protein and therefore for growth and tissue renewal.

Zinc also participates in the breakdown of proteins, metabolism and absorption of vitamin A from the diet. Zinc is also important for our immune system. In fact, it is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals.

Zinc in the diet

Important food sources of zinc are meat, fish, vegetables, legumes and rice. The zinc in foods of animal origin is better absorbed than plant foods. There are a number of nutrients, such as phosphorus, which reduce the absorption of zinc.

Lack of zinc

In adults there are a few consequences caused by a deficiency of zinc. Changes in the senses of taste, smell, touch and night blindness are disorders associated with zinc deficiency.

Excess zinc

Zinc has an upper consumption limit of 25 mg per day. This quantity is equivalent to almost eight hamburgers!

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

If you underwent surgery for the placement of a gastric band or sleeve, it is vital that an amount equal to 10 milligrams of zinc per day is consumed. This value corresponds to 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.

Following gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures

Following gastric bypass surgery, biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch procedures, the recommended daily amount of zinc is higher. Because of the change to the intestine post surgery, the body finds it more difficult to absorb zinc. Therefore, it is necessary to take a greater amount of zinc to provide your body with an adequate daily intake. The amount to be taken every day should be less than 200%; this value corresponds to more than 20 milligrams of zinc per day.
