How does Vitamin B1 work?

Vitamin B1 belongs to the B group of vitamins The group consists of 8 vitamins and each has a different effect.

Vitamin B1 is a water soluble vitamin and is also called thiamine. This vitamin is important for the process of energy production. It allows us to burn the carbohydrates ingested through our diet, allowing us to obtain energy. The vitamin B1 is also good for the heart and the nervous system.

Vitamin B1 in the diet

The main sources of vitamin B1 are pork and products made from grains, such as whole wheat bread. Potatoes, vegetables, milk and dairy products are sources of vitamin B1. Vitamin B1 is water soluble and sensitive to cooking. Therefore, vegetables that contain this vitamin should be cooked in as little water as possible and should not be cut into small pieces.

Lack of Vitamin B1

A deficiency of vitamin B1 can lead to increased irritability, depression, difficulty concentrating, and even memory loss. A major deficiency of vitamin B1 may occur following a prolonged and unchanged diet

Side effects produced by a high intake of vitamin B1 are few or non-existent

If you have undergone surgery for placement of a gastric band or sleeve, it is important to take a lot of vitamin B1; somewhere between 1.1 and 2.2 milligrams per day. This value corresponds to 100-200% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.
