Vitamin B3 is good
for the nervous system

How does Vitamin B3 work?

Vitamin B3 belongs to the B group of vitamins. The group consists of 8 vitamins and each has a different effect. Some B vitamins affect each other. Vitamin B6, for example is needed to transform into vitamin B3 if there are certain substances in the diet.

Vitamin B3 is a water-soluble vitamin and is also called niacin. This vitamin is good for the nervous system, the skin and the process of energy production in the body.

Vitamin B3 in the diet

Vitamin B3 is found in many foods such as meat, fish, nuts, vegetables and fruit.

Vitamin B3 is water soluble. Therefore vegetables that contain this vitamin should be cooked in little water and should not be cut into pieces that are too small: in this way you will not lose valuable vitamins. Vitamin B3 has a high resistance when it is cooked.

Lack of Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3 is present widely in protein-rich products. A deficiency of vitamin B3 does not occur easily. In some cases, perhaps because the assumption that products rich in proteins are a problem, alterations of the skin may occur, such as rashes and infection. Even disorders such as fatigue are among the possible consequences of a lack of vitamin B3.

Excess Vitamin B3

There are no known side-effects related to a high intake of this vitamin.

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

Following surgery for the placement of a gastric band or sleeve, it is important to take a lot of vitamin B3, ranging between 16 and 32 milligrams per day. This value corresponds to 100-200% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.

Following gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures

Because of changes made to the intestine following surgery, your need for vitamin B3 increases. The tract of the intestine that absorbs this vitamin has been bypassed, so that the degree of assimilation of vitamin B3 by the body is much lower. Therefore, it is necessary to take between 32 and 48 milligrams, which is more than 200 to 300% of the Recommended Daily Requirement to provide your body with an adequate daily intake.
