Vitamin B5 is essential
for the process of energy production in the body

How does Vitamin B5 work?

The vitamin B5 belongs to the B group of vitamins. The group consists of 8 vitamins and each has a different effect.

The vitamin B5 is a water-soluble vitamin and is also known as pantothenic acid. This vitamin is important for the formation and the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and therefore for the process of energy production in the body. The vitamin B5 also participates in the synthesis of certain hormones.

Vitamin B5 in the diet

Vitamin B5 is present in almost all foods, such as: vegetables, fruits, dairy products, whole grain products, meat, fish and eggs.

Vitamin B5 is water soluble. Therefore vegetables that contain this vitamin should be cooked in as a little water as possible and should not be cut into small pieces: in this way you will not lose valuable vitamins.

Lack of Vitamin B5

A deficiency of vitamin B5 occurs rarely and only in cases of severe malnutrition. Among the consequences of a lack of vitamin B5 is a burning sensation in the feet that occurs at regular intervals.

Excess Vitamin B5

Adverse effects of a high intake of vitamin B5 are few or non-existent.

Following bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures gastric

Because of changes made to the small intestine as a result of this type of intervention your need for vitamin B5 increases. The tract of the intestine that absorbs this vitamin has been bypassed, so that the degree of assimilation of vitamin B5 by the body is much lower. Therefore, it is necessary to take between 12 and 18 milligrams daily, which is more than 200 to 300% of the Recommended Daily Requirement to provide your body with an adequate intake.
