Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin and is also called cholecalciferol. It promotes the proper absorption of minerals like calcium and phosphorus in the bones.

Vitamin D3 in the diet

Foods that contain high amounts of vitamin D3 are fatty fish, cream, butter and cheese. Vitamin D3 is also often added to margarine and vegetable fats. It is also produced by the skin due to exposure to sunlight, unlike vitamin D2 which instead can not be synthesized in the skin.

Lack of vitamin D3

One of the functions of vitamin D is to promote the absorption of calcium in the bones. Any deficiency of vitamin D does not allow adequate absorption of calcium in the bones, resulting in osteomalacia (weakening of the bones). A prolonged deficiency of vitamin D3 can also cause osteoporosis. The bones become more fragile and this increases the risk that they break more easily.

Excess vitamin D3

An excess of vitamin D3 is very unlikely. In case of prolonged intake of a quantity of vitamin D3 greater than 100 micrograms per day, damage can be caused to the heart, kidneys and blood vessels. Among the possible symptoms also include nausea, drowsiness, lack of appetite and constipation.

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

It is necessary to assume an amount of between 20 and 60 micrograms, ie between 200 - 1200% of the recommended daily requirement, to provide to your body with an adequate daily intake.
