Vitamin E has
vital antioxidant properties

How does Vitamin E work?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and is also known as tocopherol. This vitamin is important as it boosts the body’s natural defences. Vitamin E also has antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that protect our body from free radicals.

Vitamin E also plays an important role in the maintenance of muscle tissue and the production of red blood cells.

Vitamin E in the diet

Important food sources of vitamin E are vegetable oils (such as sunflower oil, palm oil and rapeseed oil), egg yolk, cereal-based products and milk. Also nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamin E

Lack of vitamin E

Among the symptoms of a lack of vitamin E include anemia and, in extreme cases, brain damage, especially encephalomalacia.

Excess Vitamin E

There are no known side effects due to excessive intake of vitamin E.

Following the placement of a gastric band or sleeve

If you underwent surgery for the placement of a gastric band or sleeve, it is important to take a lot of vitamin E; up to 12 milligrams per day. This value corresponds to 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance.

Following gastric bypass surgery, duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion procedures

Because of changes made to the small intestine as a result of this type of intervention your need for vitamin E increases. The tract of the intestine that absorbs this vitamin has been bypassed, so that the degree of assimilation of vitamin E by the body is much lower. Therefore, it is necessary to assume an amount equal to 24 milligrams, or 200% of the Recommended Daily Requirement to provide your body with an adequate daily supply of this vitamin.
